The islands that make up the Azores are blessed by a warm Gulf stream providing excellent scuba diving.
The marine life in the Azores is diverse and abundant with some colorful subtropical fish species. Pelagic fishes like tuna, barracudas, jacks, sardines and mackerels are best spotted from July to September, when the warm Gulf Stream rises the sea temperature to about 20 to 23 degrees Celsius.
The best season for scuba diving is from July to September, when the weather gets drier and the water temperature increases. Most of the times you can expect clear water with 20-25 meter visibility. A 7mm wetsuit or semi-dry suit is advised. For July, August and September, a 5mm is enough for some divers. April (15ºC), May (16ºC) and June (17ºC/19ºC) are good for Macro. At least 7 species of nudibranch can be seen. Crustaceans, octopus and morays are also present at this time and of course all the other common coastal species are possible to be observed. But in these months be prepared for colder water and visibilities between 10 to 15 meters.
